Achorripsis: a Sonification of Probability Distributions

چکیده

The 1957 musical composition Achorripsis by Iannis Xenakis was composed using four different probability distributions, applied over three different organizational domains, during the course of the 7 minute piece. While Xenakis did not have sonification in mind, his artistic choices in rendering mathematical formulations into musical events (time, space, timbre, glissando speed) provide useful contributions to the “mapping problem” in three significant ways: 1. He pushes the limit of loading the ear with multiple formulations simultaneously. 2. His mapping of “velocity” to string glissando speed provides a useful method of working with a vector quantity with magnitude and direction. 3. His artistic renderings, ie. “musifications” of these distributions, invite the question, in general, as to whether musical/artistic sonifications are more intelligible to the human ear than sonifications prepared without any musical “filtering” or constraints (e.g. that they could be notated and performed by musicians).

A continuous approximation fitting to the discrete distributions using ODE

The probability density functions fitting to the discrete probability functions has always been needed, and very important. This paper is fitting the continuous curves which are probability density functions to the binomial probability functions, negative binomial geometrics, poisson and hypergeometric. The main key in these fittings is the use of the derivative concept and common differential ...

Probability Distribution Fitting to Maternal Mortality in Nigeria.

The consequences of Maternal Mortality (MM) cannot be overemphasized. It inhibits population growth resulting into loss of lives among others. This work tends to obtain the maternal mortality rates (MMR) in Nigeria, identify some fitted distributions to MMR and determine which of the distributions best fits the data. A comprehensive Exploratory Data Analysis (EDA) was carried on MM and the MMRs...

1/f Noise and Auditory Aesthetics: Sonification of a Driven Bead Pile

“1/f noise” describes the behavior of many naturally occurring complex dynamical systems over time. Perhaps more surprising than its ubiquity in nature is its prevalence in speech and especially music. Current research suggests that aspects of the human emotional response to music can be predicted using analysis based upon 1/f distributions. Musical compositions in which the pitch and duration ...

Fitting Tree Height Distributions in Natural Beech Forest Stands of Guilan (Case Study: Masal)

In this research, modeling tree height distributions of beech in natural forests of Masal that is located in Guilan province; was investigated. Inventory was carried out using systematic random sampling with network dimensions of 150×200 m and area sample plot of 0.1 ha. DBH and heights of 630 beech trees in 30 sample plots were measured. Beta, Gamma, Normal, Log-normal and Weibull prob...
